Drug use and validity of substance use self-reports in veterans seeking help for posttraumatic stress disorder.

The present study assessed drug use and the validity of self–reports of substance use among help–seeking veterans referred to a specialty clinic for the assessment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Patients (n?=?341) were asked to provide a urine sample for use in drug screening as part of an evaluation of PTSD. Self–reports of substance use were compared with same–day supervised urine samples for 317 patients who volunteered to participate in a drug screening. Results suggested that self–reports were generally quite valid. Only 8% of the cases involved patients not reporting substance use detected by urine screens. A total of 42% of the participants were identified as using drugs of abuse (excluding alcohol) through self–report and urine drug screens. Among participants using drugs, PTSD diagnosis was significantly associated with greater marijuana and depressant use as compared with stimulant (cocaine and amphetamines) use. Weibull renewal equation solution

The existing solution methods for the Weibull Renewal Equation suffer from a lack of sufficient accuracy due to the singularity at the origin for some parameter values of the weibull density. The proposed method of solution provides accuracy to any desired degree of precision for all parameter values particularly in the singular range. The method utilizes a cubic spline approximation of the unknown renewal function and applies the Galerkin technique of integral equation solution. Gaussian quadratures are used to evaluate integrals. The singular nature of the integrand is handled by the Gauss-Jacobi quadrature. Results are compared with those obtained by simulation.     

Sensitivity of four foodborne moulds to essential oils from turkish spices,herbs and citrus peel

The antifungal effects of 22 essential oils from Turkish spices, herbs and citrus peel on four foodborne moulds were evaluated for fungistatic and fungicidal activity. The most active oils were wild thyme (Thymus rariflorus L) and thyme (Thymus serpyllum L). Parsley (Penloselinum sativum Hoffin) and savory (Satureja hortensis L) oils were found to be the least active oils. Rhizopus sp displayed the greatest tolerance, and the most sensitive mould was Penicillium chrysogenum. Prolonged incubations reduced the fungistatic and fungicidal effects of oils. It was concluded that some oils may be useful as mould inhibitors at food additive levels.     

Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology 1986: Martin T. Orne.

Martin T. Orne, the 1986 recipient of the Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology, was presented with a check for $2,000 and an engrossed citation of his contribution. Orne receives this award "for his efforts to integrate psychological theory and methods with the pragmatic concerns of psychotherapy, medicine, and law. Through his research he has helped practitioners to realize the potential benefits and limitations of hypnosis, lie detection, sleep, and biofeedback, and the roles played by specific and nonspecific factors in psychotherapy and behavioral medicine. His analysis of the social context of the experiment has elucidated the importance of demand characteristics in shaping experience and behavior, and helped alter the way in which both experimentalists and clinicians evaluate the reactions of subjects, clients, and patients.
